Lot Description

[Daguerreotype] A New Orleans Thespian

Dramatic sixth-plate New Orleans daguerreotype of a possible thespian.

The mat is stamped for Maguire, and Craig's Daguerreian Registry identifies this as James Maquire, who learned the daguerreian process in Alabama before moving to New Orleans in 1842. Research may reveal if this was a well-known actor of the day or a stylish Southern gentleman but this strong portrait speaks for itself. The drape of his coat, his leather gloves and large top hat provide for a striking daguerreotype. The image is housed in a full leather case.
