Lot Description

[Daguerreotype] A Goldminer with Shakespeare’s Works

Rare sixth-plate daguerreotype of a young gold miner posed with an elaborate copy of Shakespeare's Works seen laterally reversed on the table next to him.

He obviously wants you to know he is an educated young man, as "gold fever" attracted all types of people. Wearing a typical double-breasted shirt of the fields, he has a patterned handkerchief sticking out of his pocket and a gold-gilded pin on his shirt illustrating his success. He also wears a rare circular belt buckle that appears to have an anchor design, signifying that he was in the navy or worked on a ship in his past. The image is housed in beautiful full leather case.
