Lot Description
WERNE, Ferdinand (1800-1874). Expedition to discover the sources of the White Nile, in the years 1840, 1841. London: Richard Bentley, 1849.
2 volumes, 8vo (201 x 118 mm). Folding route map, lithographed folding frontispiece. (Browned with foxing.) Publisher's light green cloth gilt (rebacked, soiled and stained). Provenance: W. B. R. Newlands (signature in pencil on half-title). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, following the German edition published in 1848. Werne's importance in the history of the search for the source of Nile is generally overlooked but, following James Bruce in 1769, he was only the second European to embark on the search; his work laid the foundation for the later journeys of Speke and Baker. He was allowed to accompany an expedition mounted by Mohammed Ali, Viceroy of Egypt, and was given the protection of the viceroy's forces. In 1841, after recovering from a period of illness, he accompanied the expedition under the leadership of the Turksh officer, Selim Qabudan (Selim Bimbashi), which traveled up river in sailing boats seeking the source of the Nile.
