Lot Description

WELLSTED, James Raymond (1805-1842). Travels in Arabia. London: John Murray, 1838. 2 volumes, 8vo (22 x 135 mm). 8pp. advertisements. 5 engraved maps (3 folding), 7 lithographed plates. (Slight foxing.) Publisher's embossed green cloth gilt (spine ends repaired, vol. II upper cover finish partially dulled.) FIRST EDITION. Wellsted surveyed and explored the Red Sea, Arabia and Oman during multiple expeditions between 1830 an 1837. The entirety of the first volume is devoted to Oman, making it the most complete account of the area published to that date. The second volume describes Sinai, the survey of the Gulf of Akabah and the Arabian and Nubian coasts. Wellsted and Lieutenant Whitelock made an ascent of Mt. Sinai, correctly measuring its altitude. The appendix describes the pilgrim route from Cairo to Mecca. Bidwell, pp.189-91, 205-09.
