Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Assorted images, some in Union cases, incl. a remarkable pair of ambrotypes.

A pair of sixth plate ambrotypes housed together in a Union case with geometric/scroll design (soiling, light nicking, some mechanical wear). The images depict a man and woman, likely husband and wife (man's image with brown residue to upper left, woman's with light discoloration). The man poses casually and holds a wide-brimmed hat in his lap, while the woman holds what appears to be the cased image of the man (the one featured here or a very similar example) in her lap facing the camera. A fascinating pair of images. -- A pair of sixth plate images housed together in a Union case with geometric/scroll design (soiling, surface wear, nicking), being a daguerreotype of a man identified in pencil behind image as "Stillman Churchill at 30 years of age," and a tintype of a young boy identified in pencil behind image as "Ned at five" (some tarnishing and soiling to both images). Stillman Churchill (1823-1899) was born into a New England family and settled in New Hampshire after marrying in 1848. He had three sons, Clarence, George, and Edward, and worked in a woolen mill and furniture shop in the 1870s and 1880s, respectively. -- A quarter plate ambrotype portrait of two young women, likely sisters, including one who appears to be wearing a black veil and dress with multiple pieces of gold-highlighted jewelry. (Significant spotting and darkening to image; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (split at spine, surface wear). -- And 4 other quarter plate ambrotypes, one quarter plate tintype, and 6 sixth plate Union cases containing 8 hard images and one modern paper portrait of a young girl. Conditions vary. -- Together, 18 daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes, some housed in Union cases.
