Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 20 sixth plate daguerreotypes of adolescent and teenage girls.
Seated portrait of a young woman with her hair worn down in curls, posed with her elbow resting on a large volume laying flat on the table next to her. The case and pose suggest that this is a European image. (Heavy tarnishing to edges, some spotting and other imperfections; no preserver present.) Housed in a fully separated maroon leatherette case (split at spine, surface wear throughout). -- Seated portrait of a young woman with her hair worn up but with strands hanging around her face in curls, wearing a floral patterned dress, gold-highlighted jewelry, and lace gloves. (Tarnishing to edges, some clouding and dust particles; original seals.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case with velvet pad stamped "BOGARDUS, ARTIST. NEW YORK." (split at spine, surface wear/loss throughout). -- Lovely portrait of a finely dressed young lady wearing several pieces of gold-highlighted jewelry including earrings, rings, and a wrist cuff, and staring directly into the camera lens. (Some clouding, spotting, and weeping/specks between glass and image, with heavy oxidation to mat; resealed 1994.) Housed in a Union case with scroll/geometric design (soiling, some nicking). -- Seated portrait of a girl wearing a plaid dress and gold-highlighted brooch. (Some spotting and clouding, spotting to mat; resealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (surface wear) with velvet pad stamped for "REIMER'S GALLERY, 397 NO. 3RD AB. GREEN, PHILADELPHIA" and pencil inscription behind image reading, "Lib Boardman, Julia & [indecipherable] at 18." -- 15 others. Conditions and housings vary. -- Together, 20 sixth plate daguerreotypes of young women.
According to Craig's Daguerreian Registry, Reimer was listed at 397 North Second Street from 1851 to 1857, and another sources has identified him with the anti-slavery movement, though this cannot be confirmed.
