Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR] Colonel's shoulder straps & insignia attrib. to 34th MA Inf., with commemorative display


Approx. 4 x 1 5/8 in. Smith's patent single bordered colonel of infantry straps (some darkening to brass borders and eagle devices, spots of wear to cloth centers). Straps feature stamped brass relief borders and brass eagles, blue cloth centers, and open backs with visible stitches and brass fasteners. -- Approx. 2 1/4 x 2 in. brass horn device indicating infantry branch of service, with soldered brass fasteners on back. -- Brass numerals "34" fastened to 1 3/8 in. diam. blue felt circle (crudely cut into an uneven "circle") with paper backing. -- Brass 5/8 x 3/8 in. brass company letter "C." -- Together, 5 items.

[With:] 19 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. likely modern framed display including a photograph of a unit in formation at camp with reverse painted glass featuring American flags, shields, and banners with the names of battles and "34th Infantry Reg. Mass. Vols." at top and bottom. Frame verso bears lacquered typewritten paper and printed map identifying the location of the photograph presented at front as Camp Worcester, Fort Lyon, Virginia, and the unit as the 34th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

The 34th Massachusetts saw action at Charlestown, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, Petersburg, and Appomattox.
