Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Group of Civil War documents incl. muster roll, discharge papers, and more.


Lot of 21 includes two Civil War-date documents recording Union officers and their African American servants:

Muster Roll of Captain Samuel M. Swartwout's Co. F, New York 48th Infantry. 30 April - 30 June 1863. With certification indicating that 1st Lt. Samuel H. Moser employed a servant "Anderson (Colored)." Captain (later Major) Swartwout was KIA on 7/30/1864 at Cemetery Hill, VA. -- Form No. 3 listing pay owed to Lt. Christian M. Prutsman (HDS identifies him as Pritzman) as well as to his servant "John Jones" listed as a "Black" male, 5'7'' with "Black" eyes and "Curly" hair. 13 July 1865.

Additional items include:

City of Boston certificate signed by Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis acknowledging receipt of a donation [1861]. -- U.S. Navy legal document related to Charles Deraw who served on the U.S. gunboat Mound City from February 1862-July 1863, and relating to his claim for prize money under Federal laws for capturing Confederate privateers.
U.S.C.A. Ordering disposal of meat. -- Manuscript order on U.S. Military Telegraph letterhead, 27 August. 1864, instructing Captain Budlong to issue a special order. -- Charge and Specification against Private J.E. Brackett of Co. E, 45th Massachusetts Regiment, Camp Meigs, 1 November 1862. -- Discharge for Private Richard J. Smith Co. C, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry. 10 June 1865. Accompanied by Smith's "Master Mason's Certificate." -- Muster-out roll for 2nd Lt. Joel L. Richardson, Co. I, Missouri 18th Infantry, for promotion to Co. C, same regiment. 11 June 1865.
-- Manuscript Special Orders, No. 74, Headquarters, Fort Macomb, La. 29 December 1865. By order of Henry K. Bicker, Captain. -- Post-Civil War printed General Orders, including one from General Grant (1867) and another from President Grant appointing General Sherman (1869).

[Also with:] Undated manuscript General Orders, No. 160, listing authorized equipment for soldiers and officers. -- Group of 6 war-date General Orders for the Philippine Islands Expeditionary Forces, 3 June - 11 August 1898; group of 3 Spanish-American war-date U.S. Army Circulars.
