Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 6 tintype portraits of men in uniform, mostly soldiers.

6 loose tintype plates ranging in size from 1 5/8 x 2 1/8 in. to 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 in., including: A full standing portrait of an artillery corporal wearing a frock coat with red-tinted chevrons and a Hardee hat. He stands in a what appears to be a makeshift studio against a blank backdrop and with one hand resting on a table placed next to him. The NCO also sports a well-manicured mustache and goatee. (Creasing, spots of loss, scratching, oxidation.) -- A full standing portrait of an infantry private in full kit, including his cap, breast plate, frock coat. He clutches the barrel of his bayonetted rifle, holding it straight upward, and he stands against what appears to be a makeshift studio backdrop. (Some creasing/denting, surface abrasions, and soiling; with spotted mat positioned over the plate.) -- And 4 other portraits including one of what appears to be a police officer wearing a hat with a wreathed device reading "OCB." Conditions vary. -- Together, 6 loose tintype portraits, mostly featuring soldiers.
