Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 4 ninth plate ambrotypes and tintypes of soldiers.
Ninth plate tintype portrait of a soldier wearing a frock coat and forage cap. (Discoloration/chemical deterioration to edges; unsealed.) Housed in a patriotic Union case with 10-cent revenue stamp affixed to back of case bearing ink initials and date "JCM Feb 18 1865." -- Ninth plate ambrotype portrait of a young soldier sporting sideburns, a partially unbuttoned frock coat, and forage cap. (Discoloration/chemical haloing throughout; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (surface wear). -- Ninth plate ambrotype copy portrait of a soldier posed sitting diagonally toward the camera, with epaulettes on his jacket and what appears to be a kepi on his head. (Few spots and abrasions to plate; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case. The previous mat from the original image is visible in the copy image featured here. -- Ninth plate tintype portrait of a young soldier wearing a frock coat and forage cap. (Image very dark, with some soiling and discoloration; unsealed.) Housed in a patriotic Union case (alignment issues, chipping). -- Together, 4 ninth plate cased portraits of soldiers.
