Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 4 cased images feat. soldiers in various state jackets, incl. hand-tinted flag image.

Ninth plate abundantly hand-tinted tintype featuring a young drummer posed before a flag backdrop, wearing his instrument and holding sticks against the drum head. He also wears a state jacket with non-traditional epaulettes and a side knife. His drum strap is also visually interesting, possibly brocade. (Spotting, a bit dark overall; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (separated at spine, with loosening repair). -- A crisp ninth plate ruby ambrotype bust portrait of a likely federal soldier wearing a state jacket with collar piping and a kepi with gold-highlighted brim detail. (Some spotting, else clear; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (split at spine, heavy surface wear and losses throughout). -- Ninth plate ruby ambrotype seated portrait of a young soldier wearing a roundabout jacket with taped trim and a forage cap. (Some surface abrasions and spotting; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (surface wear). 5-cent revenue stamp affixed to verso of plate reads "C. U[?]. Aug 25 1864." -- Sixth plate tintype of a Union soldier wearing a piped jacket with muffin buttons, possibly a NY state jacket, and posed with a cap bearing a dual color pompom and applied numeral "100." (Image overall quite dark, surface imperfections; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (separation to spine with modern taped loosening repair, surface wear and few cracks). -- Together, 4 cased images of soldiers.
