Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 4 ninth plate images of soldiers housed in Union cases.

Ruby ambrotype portrait of a Union soldier wearing an interesting jacket - perhaps a private purchase or state issue - with shoulder scales, and having what appears to be a Colt pocket revolver tucked in at his waist. (Haloing, some other discoloring; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case (soiling, nicking). -- Crisp tintype portrait of a young soldier looking to the camera with fear in his eyes. Only the top button of his frock coat is fastened. (Haloing, long vertical scratch, some spotting; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case (soiling, nicking). -- Ruby ambrotype portrait of a young soldier wearing a slouch hat tilted on his head. (Some wear and spotting to surface; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case (alignment issues rendering case difficult to open, soiling, nicking). -- Tintype portrait of a middle aged soldier with somewhat unkempt hair, beard, and mustache, wearing a kepi that appears to have a sheen to it - perhaps from a tarred rain cover. (Image a bit dark overall, some surface imperfections throughout; unsealed.) Housed in a figural Union case (soiling, chipping, closure somewhat loose) with paper advertisement for "508 Arch Street. Great New York Photograph, Photo-Miniature and Ferrotype" with browned ink inscription reading "No 28177 / Duplicates can be had by sending no / 6 cards." -- Together, 4 ninth plate portraits of soldiers housed in Union cases.
