Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 3 tintypes of Union soldiers who appear to have "seen the elephant."

Quarter plate image featuring a pair of seated pards with haunting visages, each posed with one leg crossed over the other. The subject on the viewer's right wears a cap on which insignia is visible but not decipherable. (Some loss and scratching to image, with light crackling to surface and at least one notable area of creasing to plate lower left; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (split at spine). -- Sixth plate half portrait of a young federal, his almost expressionless face almost certainly reflecting the horrors of war. He wears what appears to be a watch chain. (Image rather clear, slightly dark, few minor imperfections; unsealed, glass with adhesive residue area.) Housed in a repaired pressed paper case (repair at spine). -- Sixth plate half portrait of a young soldier wearing a shell jacket and a severe expression on his face. (Significant damage including loss and scratching to plate and a hole to upper edge of plate and mat; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case with patriotic motif [Berg 1-55] (significant wear throughout, does not close). -- Together, 3 tintypes of soldiers with notable expressions.
