Lot Description
US WWI Warner Swayse Model 1913 Musket Scope for the M1903 Rifle
World War I
10x3.25x2.125". Black enamel finish to brass scope body mounting a black rubber eyepiece and steel side mounting bracket. Left body of the scope is marked TELESCOPIC MUSKET SIGHT/MODEL OF 1913 No 2 408/THE WARNER & SWASEY CO./CLEVELAND OHIO U.S.A./PATD FEB 13-06 MAY 22-06 DEC 15-08. Item is fitted to the standard scope mount with elevation adjustment calibrated from 0 to 3000 yards, and turret adjustment for windage. Top of the scope body fitted with a WIND CORRECTION plate, and a DRIFT adjustment plate fixed above the lens. Inside of the mounting bracket has been marked FOR RIFLE NO. 625467.
Developed as a reinforced improvement to the earlier Model 1908, Warner & Swayse's Model 1913 scope was the second purpose built sniper scope issued to American military personnel, and saw service during World War I. The scope's weight, complexity, and prismatic design all negatively impacted its performance on the battlefield. By World War II, the United States relied upon simpler civilian hunting scopes for sniper rifles.
