Lot Description
**Rock Island Model 1903 Rifle with Low Number Receiver
World War I
.30-06. 24" barrel length. SN: 110346. Blued metal refinish overall set in walnut straight wrist stock with finger grooves and mounting adjustable ladder rear notch and front blade sights. Bolt action internal magazine fed repeating rifle with bayonet lug to the upper barrel band, and full length upper handguard. Receiver is marked U.S./ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/1903. The barrel is struck RIA/{Ordnance Bomb}10-18, indicating the barrel was made in 1918. Receiver serial number indicates it was made in 1907. Left wrist struck with the initials H.A./C.N. R.I., indicating arsenal rebuilds and dated 1909. Upper barrel band fits with the wood recessed 0.25" into behind the edge of the steel. The receiver number for this 1903 rifle falls into the early "Low Number" range produced by Rock Island Arsenal before the introduction of double heat treatment. Rifles in this serial range are generally considered unsafe to shoot, owing to the 68 failures of single heat treated receivers in that batch of just over one million examples.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
