Lot Description

Composite US Model 1879 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle
Indian Wars

.45-70. 29.875" barrel length. SN: 300666. Blued finish with walnut straight wrist stock mounting Model 1879 pattern buckhorn rear and front blade sights. Single shot breechloading rifle with high arch breechblock, freefloating firing pin, three click action, and a two piece triggerguard with sling loop. Trigger is vertically serrated, and the barrel secured with two U-stamped bands. Lockplate marked with the {US Eagle} followed by U.S., but the SPRINGFIELD marking is nearly obliterated with only the serifs on the lower edges remaining. Breechblock is marked MODEL/1873/{Eaglehead/Arrows}/US. Left barrel is marked V/P/{Eaglehead}/P. Buttplate US initials are obliterated. Item comes with a reproduction leather sling.
