Lot Description

US Model 1868 Rifle
Indian Wars

.50-70. 32.675" barrel length. SN: 36403. Blued finish with case colored breechblock mounting a straight wrist walnut stock with full length handguard fixed by two barrel bands. Single shot breechloading rifle mounting adjustable rear ladder and front blade sights. Lockplate is dated 1863 behind the hammer, and marked {US Eagle} followed by U.S/SPRINGFIELD forward. Breechblock is marked 1870/{Eaglehead}/US. Counterpane is struck twice with the ESA cartouche of Erskine S. Allin, the originator of the breechblock used in this rifle. A third cartouches read SWP for Samuel W. Porter, whose cartouche often appears on Allin conversion rifles. Rifle features a high arch breechblock, spring-loaded firing pin, two click action, and a smooth trigger. Comes with a cleaning rod and reproduction sling.
