Lot Description

Whitney Contract U.S. Model 1828 (1816 Type III) Percussion Altered Musket
American Civil War

.69 Cal. 42" barrel length. SN: NSN. Finished in the white with brass conversion plate to the lock set in straight wrist walnut stock with full length handguard. Single shot percussion smoothbore musket with the handguard retained by three barrel bands with front blade sight tot he upper barrel band, and a bayonet lug to the forward barrel. Lockplate is marked behind the hammer NEW/HAVEN/1841 while the markings forward of the hammer read US/E. WHITNEY. Tang is dated 1841, and the top of the barrel is struck US/JH/P. Left barrel flat struck with inspector marks H, O, and K. Counterpane shows the JH cartouche of Joseph Hannis, and the WAT cartouche of William Anderson Thornton. Buttplate further stamped US. Comes with steel ramrod.
