Lot Description
Whitney Contract U.S. Model 1828 (1816 Type III) Flintlock Musket
.69 Cal. 42.125" barrel length. SN: NSN. Brown patina overall in walnut straight wrist full length stock with three barrel bands, and upper band blade with fixed rear notch sights. Single shot smoothbore muzzle loading flintlock with iron ramrod, and bayonet lug to upper barrel. Lockplate is marked NEW/HAVEN/1836 behind the cock and U.S./{Crossed Arrow and Olive Branch}/E. WHITNEY. Item features a brass pan, flint with leather to the jaws, and sling loops to triggerguard and middle barrel band. Barrel marked LS US/P and is dated 1830 or 1839 to the tang. Buttplate marked US. Counterpane shows the circled LS cartouche of inspector Luther Sage.
