Lot Description

U.S. Model 1841 "Mississippi Rifle" by Whitney
American Civil War

.54 Cal. 33" barrel length. SN: NSN. Metal finish is a cleaned gray with brown patina forming overall set in straight wrist walnut stock with brass fittings and handguard secured by two barrel bands, and a brass patchbox to right butt. Single shot percussion rifle musket with fixed rear notch and front brass blade sights. Lockplate marked behind the hammer N.HAVEN/1850 and E.WHITNEY/US forward. Tang date reads possibly 1850 with the last digit weak. Top of the barrel marked US/JH along with V and P. Left barrel flat struck 17 followed by M. Stock shows weak sanded edges with varnish applied overall. Weak remnants of a cartouche to the counterpane. Comes with a brass tipped cleaning rod. Multiple screws replaced, including the hammer screw, and possibly the tang and counterpane screws.
