Lot Description

Ames U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword
American Civil War

30.5" blade length. 36.25" overall with hilt. Curved single edged spearpoint double fullered blade with curved hilt composed of brass with shagreen wrapped wood grips. Blade is etched with the manufacturer marking Ames Mfg. Co/Chicopee/Mass, and is further adorned with etched panoplies of arms, floral borders, U.S. marking and banner enclosing the national motto E Pluribus Unum. Hilt features a pierced guard with beaded ground and vine enclosed floral designs. Knuckle bow is composed of two pieces mated with Turk's head pommel showing a peened tang. Item retains only the ends of the wire wrap that has broken free of the hilt.
