Lot Description

Unmarked U.S. Model 1840 Medical Staff Officer's Sword
American Civil War

27.25" tapered straight unfullered spear point blade, 32.25" in overall length. 5.25" gilt cast brass hilt with 4" scroll pattern cross guard and 1.25" shield shaped langets with the silvered letters MS on the obverse. Hilt cast with chased foliate themes, a Spread-Winged Eagle and an acorn pommel. Blade about 2" short of full length and lightly etched with flowing foliate themes. No maker mark is visible on the ricasso. The sword is accompanied by its brass scabbard with gilt chased brass mounts and two suspension rings.
