Lot Description

U.S. Springfield Model 1888 Ramrod Bayonet Rifle
Spanish American War

.45-70 Government. 32.625" barrel length. SN: 533328 (mfg. ca.1891). Blued finish and color casehardened finish, walnut stock. Single shot breechloading metallic cartridge military rifle with 1884 pattern Buffington adjustable ladder rear sight, musket style fixed front sight blade, extendable ramrod bayonet and sling and stacking swivels. Lock marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD with a {Spread Winged Eagle} and breechblock marked U.S./MODEL/1884. Counterpane with weak SWP (Samuel W Porter) cartouche dated 1891 and a weak {Circle-P} firing proof is present behind the triggerguard. Breech with V/P/{Eagle Head} inspection marks as well as an additional small A mark. Rifle features a low arch breech with bronze firing pin, three-click tumbler, grooved trigger with checkered tip, one-piece triggerguard and buttplate with trap door.
