U.S. Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Rifle Altered to Carbine Configuration
Indian Wars

.45-70. 22" barrel. SN: 92379 (mfg. ca.1878). No finish remaining, walnut stock with long comb and short, thick wrist. Single shot breechloading metallic cartridge military rifle altered to carbine. Lock marked in two lines U.S./SPRINGFIELD and with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}, breech block marked U.S./MODEL/1873. Narrow receiver, low arch breech with bronze firing pin, three click tumbler, smooth trigger, "R" marked continuous curved base rear sight, front sight missing, saddle bar added to counterpane. Stock with solid buttplate and without carbine cleaning rod cut out, rifle cleaning rod channel in forend filled, upper band without stacking swivel. Top of comb rack marked 42.
