Single shot dropping breech metallic cartridge rifle. Two line barrel mark reads ALLEN & WHEELOCK/ALLEN'S PATENT SEPT. 18, 1860. Matching serial (assembly) numbers on barrel under forend, inside forend and on breech lever mechanism. Frame serial number not visible due to wrist repair. Designed for the Allen patent adjustable rear sight system, which is missing. An incorrect dovetailed rear sight base is also present in the barrel cut and an incorrect replacement blade front sight is present. Trap door in butt for tool is empty.
