[Nielsen, Kay] Grimm, (Jacob and Wilhelm)
Hansel and Gretel and other stories by the brothers Grimm
London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1925). First and limited edition, deluxe issue, one of 600 numbered copies, signed by Nielsen, this copy stamped “Presentation Copy” in blind on title-page and frontispiece tissue-guard (the number “543” in ink on colophon over now largely erased “o-o-o-o”). 4to. (viii), 276, (2) pp. Illustrated with color frontispiece and 11 color plates, all mounted with captioned tissue-guards, and numerous in-text black and white illustrations. Publisher's white pictorial cloth, stamped in gilt and in turquoise, very light soiling; top edge gilt, other edges trimmed, very light foxing to fore-edge; patterned endpapers; light stains in gutter of prelims; light stains and separation at gutter of pp. 48-49, and 208-09; tissue guard of plate at p. 72 with small crease and closed tear at bottom right; in blue cloth-covered box.
Near-fine copy of one of Kay Nielsen's greatest works, in the publisher's scarce and beautifully decorated boards.
Nielsen began painting illustrations for the Grimm's fairy tales early in his career, but his progress was delayed due to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. By 1924 Hodder and Stoughton decided to resume Nielsen's Grimm project, and the present work was the last of his four limited editions to be published in England.
Very rare in the deluxe binding.
