Venice: Antonio Zatta, 1785. First edition. Volume IV only. Folio. Illustrated with an engraved title-page and 45 (of 65) double-page engraved maps, each with hand-colored outlining; lacking the 20-map North American section (including the John Mitchell maps). Full contemporary vellum-covered boards, stamped in gilt; corners worn and water damaged, top and bottom of front joint splitting, headcap worn; all edges stained red; paste paper paste-downs; dampstaining in bottom corner and upper gutter of all leaves; ownership signature on front blank, book-plate on same. Sold with all faults.
The fourth and final volume of Antonio Zatta's extensive world atlas. Published between 1775-85, the first three volumes covered Europe and Russia, while this final volume covered the rest of the world, with maps of Africa, India, and North and South America. Zatta's atlas was designed to accompany the Italian translation of Anton Friedrich Büsching's geographical work, Erdebeschreibung.
