Lot Description
Purdey Hammer Gun 8 Gauge with Makers Case and Accessories
8 Gauge. 32.3" barrel length. SN: 8972. 0.83" chokes at both muzzles. 14.2" length of pull. 1.68" drop to comb. 3" drop to heel. Browned metal finish to the Damascus barrels with a casehardened frame mounted in an exposed hammer sidelock action with flat wrist English stock and splinter forend. Double barrel extractor shotgun with underlever action and mounting a naked butt with bordered checkering to the wood. The barrel rib is signed J. PURDEY, 314 1/2, OXFORD STREET, LONDON., with the flats showing Londing firing proof marks and 8 gauge markings to each barrel. Both barrel serial numbers match the frame, stock, and the forend. Further {Crown/V} London proofs appear to the watertables with both sidelocks signed PURDEY. The upper tang is marked PATENT within a border, and all parts of the frame display fine English style floral scroll engraving with floral embellishments to each bolt and screw head. The timing is off on the screws for the lower tang. Both hammers have fishmouth engraved embellishments above floral scrollwork, and the underlever features fine knurling to both sides. The toe of the stock mounts an oval silver escutcheon, and the wrist displays bordered two point engraving. The Key fastened splinter forend features engraved mountings and screws with English flat checkering overall. Item comes in a leather bound case with red velvet liner and a maker label and loading label to the lid. The maker label reads J. Purdey,/314 1/2 OXFORD STREET./near Hanover Square/London/Gun Manufacturer. Included in the case are: a pamphlet entitled DIRECTIONS FOR PURDEY's CENTRAL-FIRE BREECH LOADERS CHARGE AND DIRECTIONS FOR LOADiNG CENTRAL-FIRE CARTRIDGES published in 1872, assorted powder measures and chisels, handwritten directions for installing a spare pin, cardboard box with pin wrapped in paper, two lengths of wood cleaning rod, assorted bore mops and brushes, and a Hoppe's No. 9 tin with instructional pamphlet.
