Lot Description

Contemporary Flintlock Rifle in the Style of an Elizabethan Carbine by John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

.40 caliber. 30" two stage octagonal to round barrel length. SN: NSN. Bright metal finish. Maple stock has rococo style intertwined sea serpent and eagle carved to left side of grip, helix pattern carvings to right side of grip, and incised lines carved to length of both sides of forearm. Flintlock action rifle with notch rear sight and blade front sight. Forearm features six carved elk horn filigree fittings and two carved elk horn filigree fittings intertwined with grotesque motifs to both sides. Flared buttstock has various fittings that include carved elk horn panels depicting hunting scenes and grotesque figures. Wrist is fitted with three different carved elk horn grotesque figures including a devil figure to top of wrist is carved with initials JD/fecit/2004. Side panel of wrist also has two cast silver figures. Other cast silver fittings include a neoclassical style triggerguard, forend cap, and stock thimbles. Buttstock is fitted with three cast brass panels surrounding carved elk horn panels showing scenes of a cannoneer and two grotesque characters. Lock is a lateral flintlock made in the style of a wheellock action, from the Rifle Shoppe. Included with item is a wood ramrod with ebony tip and ivory spacer.
