Lot Description

Contemporary Flintlock Jaeger Rifle with Boar Hunting Motifs by John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

.40 caliber. 32" two stage octagonal to round barrel length. SN: NSN. Browned metal finish. Full length highly figured walnut stock has a perch belly butt, and carved rococo scroll to straight grip and forearm. Flintlock jaeger rifle with neoclassical notch rear sight and silver blade front sight. Item features double set triggers, sling swivels, and a patchbox on right side. Fittings include cast silver neoclassical vignette to top of wrist. Forearm has six filigree fittings and a staghorn forend cap. Sideplate fitting is filigreed cast silver surrounding a carved elk horn vignette showing a stag and hunter scene. Patchbox fittings include filigreed borders and a plain elk horn panel surrounded by cast silver filigree with scene of hounds attacking a boar. Buttplate has simple neoclassical style engravings. Bottom edge of stock has a filigree fitting with vignette of a prancing stag to toe, and a grotesque mask sling stud. Triggerguard is neoclassical style with a small vignette engraved with a D monogram. Ferrules are all cast silver in filigree style. Lock is Queen Anne style. Included with item is a wood ramrod with carved elk horn tip showing a devil grotesque, and ramrod attachment in patchbox. Wrist of item has a base for a hand made peep sight, but sight is not present.
