Lot Description

Contemporary Flintlock Viennese Style Jaeger by John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

.54 caliber. 31" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Browned metal finish. Full length figured walnut stock has a carved straight grip and forearm. Flintlock jaeger rifle with neoclassical two leaf folding notch rear sight and fleur-de-lis brass blade front sight. Stock wrist features carved devil grotesque surrounded by sea serpent scrollwork. Buttstock has carved incised lines and grotesque intertwined in scroll to left side of toe. Forearm features carved incised lines and rococo scrollwork with some animal head motifs. There is also a grotesque carved to bottom of stock in front of triggerguard. Side panel has a cast silver filigree style fitting of a boar and hunter scene. Comb of stock has cast filigree sea serpent fitting, and bottom edge a cast silver filigree fitting with animal head motifs. Top of wrist has a cast silver neoclassical vignette fitting. Triggerguard is cast silver and appears to be a neoclassical style fish or mermaid. Ferrules are neoclassical style and have a throat fitting that is highly filigreed with intertwined sea serpents.
