Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. GRABILL, John C. (1849-1903), photographer. "A Pretty Group at an Indian Tent." Jack Redcloud brings the news of surrender and end of war to his lady friends. [Deadwood, SD], [1891].

10 3/4 x 9 3/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (toning, occasional spotting and staining to print and mount, upper left corner of print clipped; edge and corner wear to mount). Numbered, titled, and copyrighted by Grabill in the negative. Inked notation to verso states, "Brought from the West by Col. N.W. Osborne USA, circa 1877," which predates when the photograph was likely taken, at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre.

A Native American male sits atop a horse in front of a tipi next to 3 women wearing blankets, one holding a baby.

Nathan Ward Osborne served as colonel of the 5th United States Infantry from 1888-1895.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
