Lot Description

[STEAMBOATS] -- [POSTAL COVERS]. A group of 17 manuscript covers from Mississippi River steamboats, including: 


Manuscript steamboat cover marked "D.L. Talley," with 3 cent embossed stamp. Steamboat D.L. Talley was built in 1870, New Orleans - Shreveport 1870-1872, 1873-1895 Mobile trade, burned at Mobile. -- Letter dated 1 January 1845, from Natchez to New Orleans, manuscript marking "Ambassador." Steamboat Ambassador was built in 1843, lost at Luxemburg, MO, April 1847. -- 2 covers with manuscript steamboat markings "W.S. Pike," and 3 cent embossed stamps. Includes example with agent stamp "St. Francisville & New Orleans," dated November 1875, with manuscript penciled notation to verso indicating that the cover was once the property of noted New Orleans writer and historian Leonard Huber. Each cover addressed to West Baton Rouge. Steamboat W.S. Pike was built in 1869, burned December 1875. -- Manuscript steamboat cover marked "B.L. Hodge," with 3 cent embossed stamp. Steamboat B.L. Hodge was inovled in the Mississippi River trade from 1867-1873. -- 2 covers with manuscript steamboat markings "La Belle," and 3 cent embossed stamps. Steamboat La Belle was built in 1869, sank in the Red River September 1878 with 2699 bales of cotton.

[With:] 4 covers with manuscript steamboat markings "Lotus #3," and 3 cent embossed stamps. Steamboat Lotus #3 was built in 1869, sunk in 1876 near Lake Charles, LA, with 1000 bales of cotton aboard. -- Manuscript steamboat cover marked "Steamer Era No. 9," with 3 cent embossed stamp. Steamboat Era #9 was built in 1868, Red River Packet Co. -- 2 covers with manuscript steamboat markings "Era No. 10," and 3 cent embossed stamps. Steamboat Era #10 was built in 1868, burned and lost at Rayville, LA 1892. -- Letter dated 1849, written in French, from Monclair Landing to New Orleans, manuscript marking "Josephine." Steamboat Josephine was built in 1844, snagged and lost at Clarksville, TN, 1850. -- Letter dated 1851, from New Orleans to Port Barre, LA, manuscript marking "Anna." Steamboat Anna was built in 1849, abandoned in 1859. -- Manuscript steamboat cover marked "Wild Wagner," with 3 cent embossed stamp. Steamboat Wild Wagner was built in 1864, 1867 to New Orleans-Bayou Sara Mail Line Service, dismantled 1873. 

Together, 17 covers or letters with manuscript steamboat markings. Condition consistent with age and use, including soiling, some areas of loss to edges and corners.
