Lot Description

[POLITICS]. A group of 4 political items related to the 1876 and 1884 presidential elections, highlighted by ticket counting the vote for the contested Hayes-Tilden election in 1876.


4 3/4 x 3 in. blue cardstock ticket to the vote counting for the 1876 election (wear to edges, minor blemishes and spots to card). Ticket, No. 996, admits bearer to the House of Representatives chamber on 8 February 1877. The Electoral Commission would rule in favor of Hayes the following day. 

[With:] 2 1/2 x 5 3/8 in silk ribbon featuring applied albumen portraits of James G. Blaine and John A. Logan with flag, shield, and knight motifs surrounding (fraying to bottom edge, light toning). Light copyright handstamp to verso, mostly illegible, but likely by Brown & Sanson, NY. Cataloged in Sullivan & Fischer as JGB-19. -- 2 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. silk ribbon featuring applied albumen portraits of Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks with flag, eagle, and shield motifs surrounding (fraying to top and bottom edge, top edge folded down and secured, spotting throughout). Copyright stamp to verso by Brown & Sanson, NY, 1884. Cataloged in Sullivan & Fischer as GC-7. -- 2 7/8 x 4 3/4 in. cardstock trading card featuring results from the 1884 election (creasing with small tear to right edge, light soiling, and wear to edges and corners). Front of card features American flag with portraits of Cleveland, Thurman, Harrison, and Morton. Back of card lists popular election results by state. Card produced by The Bay State Clothing Company, Worcester, MA. -- Together, 3 items related to the Presidential election of 1884.
