Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A pair of portraits of young boys dressed in military attire.
Quarter plate daguerreotype, possibly a copy, featuring a young boy standing in military dress including brass buttons, collar insignia, shoulder straps, kepi with insignia, and belt buckle, all highlighted in gold. (Heavy tarnishing around subject, significant clouding and splotching throughout; loose without mat, preserver, cover glass, or case.) No case. -- Sixth plate ambrotype of a seated, bug-eyed boy dressed in the manner of a soldier. (Some spotting, areas of image loss, and crackling to emulsion; unsealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case. The star insignia on the boy's hat along with the vertical lines over his shoulders are indicative of an early wartime, likely southern origin. Aside from being a widely generic form of insignia, the star emblem is associated with both Texas and Mississippi troops, however in this case we cannot confirm any connection. -- Together, 2 hard plate portraits of young boys dressed in military attire.
