Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 20 assorted portraits of women of varying ages, highlighted by half plate daguerreotype of two women, possibly sisters.
Half plate daguerreotype portrait of two women, likely sisters, seated together. (Light spotting, few small scratches and wipe marks; crudely resealed with transparent tape.) Housed in a floral Union case (bottom edge of back cover missing, non-functioning closure, heavy soiling.) -- Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of an identified young lady, wearing a beaded cross necklace. (Crisp, retains good contrast; original seals.) Housed in a pressed paper case (broken closure clasp). Penciled inscription in back of case reads, "Fannie Paine - at - 1856 Hartwick NY / When - 18 years old." -- Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of a lovely youg woman wearing fine clothing and holding a framed image of a gentleman in view of the camera. (Darkening, splotching, bits of image deterioration, spotting to mat and preserver; unsealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case. -- And 17 others, including 4 sixth plate daguerreotypes, one quarter plate ambrotype, 7 sixth plate ambrotypes, 2 ninth plate ambrotypes, 2 sixth plate tintypes, and one oval portrait on milk glass, many wthout full cases. -- Together, 20 portraits of women, some housed in Union cases, a few with photographer identification.
