Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 11 daguerreotypes featuring gentleman of varying ages, incl. portraits by ANSON, WHITEHURST, and VAN LOAN.


Quarter plate daguerreotype bust portrait of a gentleman with a patterned cravat. New York: Anson, n.d. (Light spotting; unsealed.) Housed in a geometric Union case under patriotic mat. -- Sixth plate close-up portrait of a man with mutton chops and long hair. (Spotting, few clouded areas; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed ppaer case. -- Sixth plate seated portrait of a young man subtly smiling and grasping a book with both hands. Philadelphia: Van Loan, n.d. (Minor spots, oxidation to mat, no preserver present.) Housed in a leatherette case. Velvet pad marked for Van Loan. -- and 8 others, including 2 quarter plate portraits and 6 sixth plate portraits, some with broken cases. -- Together, 11 daguerreotypes featuring men, including one folk art portrait and 3 Union cases in all.
