[MacARTHUR, Douglas (1880-1964)]. A group of ephemera from attempts to "draft" the General to run for President.
Paid advertisement by the Wisconsin Douglas MacArthur for President Club run in the Appleton Post-Crescent encouraging Wisconsin voters to vote for MacArthur-pledged delegates on the Republican ticket in the 1944 Wisconsin primary. -- Political campaign sticker "Republicans draft General MacArthur for President," ca 1944. -- Handbill enjoining "Fellow Americans!" to join the publisher in asking for a "Republican Reformed Ticket / Bring MacArthur Back as the Next President of these United States." N.d., n.p. -- A blank certificate from the "Ohio MacArthur for President Club" which granted charters to organizations promoting a MacArthur presidency, 1944. -- Metamorphic pamphlet featuring a front image of George Washington "Our First President / General Washington / Soldier and Statesman" with cut-out face opening to reveal the likeness of "Our Next President / General MacArthur / Soldier and Statesman." Published by the Draft MacArthur Committee, ca 1952. -- "Blueprint for Survival: Complete Text of General MacArthur's Speech on Constitutional Government Delivered before the Joint Session of Mississippi Legislature Jackson, Miss., March 22, 1952." Demand MacArthur Committee, ca 1952. -- Assorted stamps advocating MacArthur for president.
Though General Douglas MacArthur was leading Allied forces against Japan at the time, some Republican conservatives supported his 1944 candidacy for the Republican nomination on the presidential ticket. MacArthur remained popular with many after WWII, and was again encouraged to run in the 1952 presidential election.
