Lot Description
EISENHOWER, Dwight D. (1890-1969). Typed letter with facsimile signature. Commodore Hotel, New York, 30 September 1952.
1 page, 4to, 7 x 10 1/4 in, on Office of Dwight D. Eisenhower letterhead, old creases, framed with original envelope and a photographic print of Eisenhower.
Written during Eisenhower's 1952 presidential campaign in the wake of the Nixon scandal and the Checkers Speech. In the late summer, Nixon was accused by several newspapers of receiving undeclared gifts from wealthy donors. Reportedly, Eisenhower considered changing running mate, however, Nixon's televised Checkers Speech in response to the accusations was warmly received by voters.
Here Eisenhower writes to a supporter regarding his vice presidential nominee, Richard Nixon: "I share your deep faith in Richard Nixon. He is courageous, four-square, young American, with years of service ahead hor his country. My personal confidence in him was never shaken; and his manly and full statement to the American people, answering the unfair attacks on his integrity, more than justified that confidence." Eisenhower shares his regrets that he cannot sign his letter.
