[MANUSCRIPTS]. An 1867 European travel archive from Edward P. Torrey.
TORREY, Edward P. Archive of approximately 27 letters to his wife from his travels to Europe. Various places, 16 June-28 September 1867. Approximately 207 pages, 8vo, some on hotel stationary, occasional brown spotting, old creases, light wear to edges, housed in embossed leather portfolio.
The letters document Torrey's visit to Europe in the summer and early autumn of 1867. He travels across the Atlantic on the Steamer Minnesota, venturing first to Windemere Lake, England; Chepstow, Wales; London; Dieppe, France; Paris; Brussels, Belgium; Aix la Chapelle, Prussia; Frankfort am Main, Germany; Lucerne, Switzerland; Geneva, Switzerland; back to Paris, London, and Liverpool to return home. He writes extensively and at length to his wife telling her of his visits to churches, museums, and historical locales.
[With:] Approximabely 20 additional documents both printed and manuscript. Most relate to the geneaolgy and history of the Torrey family, including connections to Admiral Dewey and President William H. Taft.
[Also with:] The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments. Oxford: Oxford University Ppess, 1864. 8vo. Contemporary brown morocco, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering in one. Provenance: E.P. Torrey (name gilt to front board).
