Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 9 European portraits in wall frames, highlighted by attractive daguerreotypes of men, women, and children, including:
2 3/4 x 3 5/8 in. (sight) ambrotype portrait of a lovely young woman wearing a boldly striped dress and holding a book in one hand, its pages highlighted gold. (Minor image fading in spots, otherwise excellent clarity; unexamined out of the frame.) Housed under what appears to be an eglomise mat with decorative jewel adornments, inside of a wall frame with hanging fob at top (surface wear and cracking to frame). -- 2 3/4 x 3 5/8 in. (sight) ambrotype portrait of a dashing young gentleman wearing a grin and a patterned vest with gold-highlighted accessories. (Tarnishing around edges, light spotting throughout; unexamined out of the mat.) Housed under an eglomise mat with sealed edges (some loss to black finish of mat). -- 2 1/4 x 2 7/8 in. (sight) daguerreotype portrait of a young girl holding her doll, the background and the girl's eyes tinted light blue. (Spots of tinting loss and image deterioration to plate, doll a bit blurry from likely movement; unexamined out of the frame.) Housed under an eglomise mat inside of a wall frame with hanging fob at top (back of frame with new seal). Remnants of pencil and ink inscriptions written in French visible through clear adhesive on back of frame identify the subject as "Noemie Touchon," born in 1848, and the photograph as having been taken in 1854. -- 2 3/4 x 3 5/8 in. (sight)daguerreotype portrait of two young girls wearing matching dresses featuring hand tinting. (Some softening of focus and image deterioration to certain spots, with tarnishing and spotting to edges; unexamined out of the mat.) Housed under an eglomise mat with sealed edges. (wear to adhesive at edges). One of the girls holds a basket of flowers tinted in red. -- And 5 other portraits including 3 matted and sealed daguerreotypes and 2 framed ambrotypes by W.H. Ainsworth. -- Together, 9 attractive European portraits housed in decorative mats and wall frames.
