Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 19 cased images, mostly daguerreotypes of young men, highlighted by portraits by Van Loan and Ennis Galleries, including:


VAN LOAN, Samuel, photographer. Quarter plate daguerreotype portrait of a handsome young man with lightly tinted cheeks. Philadelphia: Van Loan, n.d. (Tarnish to edges, spotting to mat, no preserver present; unexamined out of the case.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case with velvet pad stamped for Van Loan's gallery (fully separated at spine, significant wear throughout). -- VAN LOAN, Samuel, photographer. Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young man smiling smugly. Philadelphia: Van Loan, n.d. (Heavy tarnish and spotting to plate, no preserver present; unexamined out of the case.) Housed in a fully separated leatherette case with velvet pad stamped for Van Loan's gallery (fully separated at spine, heavy wear throughout, velvet pad loose). -- ENNIS, photographer. Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a fresh-faced young man with tinted cheeks and nicely coiffed hair. Philadelphia: Ennis Gallery, n.d. (Good clarity, spotting to mat; possibly resealed.) Housed in a full pressed paper case with velvet pad stamped for Ennis Gallery (heavy surface wear throughout). -- Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of a bearded young man with long hair. (Excellent clarity, some darkening to image overall.) Housed in a double-sided panel in a leatherette case (surface wear). The image is viewable as a positive from both sides of the panel with dark velvet pads on either end of the case. -- And 15 others, including one quarter plate daguerreotype, 12 sixth plate daguerreotypes (one of which may show the same young man featured in the double-sided ambrotype described above), one eighth plate daguerreoytpe, and one ninth plate daguerreotype. -- Together, 19 cased images of young gentlemen. Conditions vary, though most have tarnishing and spotting. Some not housed in cases.
