American, 19th century. 4 x 4 x 5 in. relief-carved coconut shell container on stand (soiling and some abrasions throughout, ivory pull missing, crack extending from corner of lid to one of three holes near "pointed" end; one foot of stand fully separated and "repaired" with tape). Vessel body incised with floral accents and patriotic symbols including an eagle flanked by flags, holding an olive branch and arrows on one side and a cartouche with inscribed heraldic design depicting mountains and ships on the other side. Surrounding fields are filled with geometric designs, bird forms, and cross-hatched background.
