Sir John Mordaunt, 7th Bt.(c. 1734-1823), who was Member of Parliament for Warwick, married Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Thomas Prowse, of Axbridge, Somerset, in 1769. Three of their daughters are shown in the present painting: Catherine, the eldest of the three, married Rev. Francis Mills of Barford, Warwickshire, in 1811; Charlotte married Richard Hippisley Tuckfield of Fulford, Devon, in 1800 and died in 1848; and Susan, the youngest, married William, 2nd Earl of St. Germans, as his fourth wife in 1814 and died in 1830.

Charlecote Antiques was an anchor of Kansas City’s historic Crestwood neighborhood across four decades. The shop represented a multi-generational passion for scholarship and collecting with an emphasis on British Furniture and Decorative Arts. Opened in 1980 by Kaye Francis Miller, Charlecote built a reputation for sourcing fine 18th century furniture directly from England with a keen eye on craftsmanship and form. Todd Miller soon followed his mother into the business and further developed Charlecote into a world-class retailer. Todd loved taking trips to Europe to find beautiful and unique items to bring back to the shop. He became a staple of the art fair circuit around the nation and endeared himself to both customers and fellow dealers with his knowledge and willingness to teach others.
Framed: 38 x 33 inches.
Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust; canvas is lined and passages of the paint are pressed due to the lining process; network of craquelures throughout, which appear stable; one pinpoint paint loss along the upper right edge; pinpoint paint droplets scattered throughout; one vertical scuff mark in upper left corner, no greater in length than 3 inches; a very faint, curving scratch in the center left, within the background; areas of inpainting scattered throughout, but mostly only visible under close examination. Under UV: thick varnish layer fluoresces green and prohibits viewing of all inpainting; however, strokes of inpainting are evident in areas of the girls' dresses, as well as in small spots in the ground below them.
