Lot of 2. Albumen photograph, 15.375 x 17.875 in., on 20 x 22.875 in. mount. Photograph copyrighted and signed lower right by Moses P. Rice, Washington, DC. Mount verso with "Rice / Photographer / 1217-1215-1225 Penna. Ave." applied paper label. Damage to photograph and mount, consisting of 11 in. horizontal split extending through center of image. Originally taken in the Washington, DC studio of Alexander Gardner on January 2, 1865. Printed and published by Moses P. Rice in 1892, and illustrated in Katz' Custer in Photographs (K-46). From left to right are Generals Wesley Merritt, Philip Sheridan, George Crook, James Wilson Forsyth, and George A. Custer.

Custer photograph and mount damaged while in transit, likely a result of brittle mount. 11 in. horizontal split in photograph extends from Merritt's shoulder strap to Custer's shoulder strap. Additional splits in mount, including bottom edge (near center).
