The Wasdale, Sherwood, Benicia and Hartfield were identical ships built in 1881 by Whitehaven Shipbuilding Co., Whitehaven, England, for John Danson Newton. See Marine Engineer and Naval Architect, Vol. 8, August 1, 1886, pg. 142.
The White Heather was built for R. Cecil Leigh in 1890 by John Reid & Co., in Glasgow, Scotland. Intended as a private yacht, it passed through a number of hands, including Harrison Drummond and Edmund Randolph of New York. It was renamed Apache in 1904.

The consignor's colonial style home, Glen Cree, was featured in the magazine Colonial Homes, November-December 1985, and much of the collection was photographed.
