The Confederacy was launched on November 8, 1778 in Chatham, Connecticut. Commanded by Captain S. Harding, the ship successfully waylayed British ships during the American Cause, and later transported foreign dignitaries to Europe. On its return from the Caribbean in 1781, the Confederacy encountered the British ships Orpheus and Roebuck, and was taken into British possession.
