The pipe of tapering form inlaid with rectangles on red Catlinite and lead on a flattened and studded pipe stem.
L: 27 1/2 in.Provenance: The Luther R. and Frances T. Zehner Collection.
Dr. Zehner's diary of May 1950, records that "I got the following articles from Charlie Looking Back-a very fine black Catlinite pipe with lead inlay. He got it from an old man from Siston, SD by the name of Bear. He had it now for about 40 years. An old Sioux flute. Charlie got this flute from his uncle Jim Little Eagle, who had lived in Little Eagle and who died about 51 years ago. He died one year (after) he gave it to Charlie, so Charlie has it about 52 years."
