Sioux women's hair pipe bone ceremonial breastplate first half 20th century

Colored beads above nine rows of hair pipe bone with hair pipe bone and bead danglers.

L: 49 in.

Provenance: The Luther R. and Frances T. Zehner Collection.

According to Dr. Zehner's diary of May 4, 1950, "Bought a small women's breastplate from Mrs. Dick White Eagle. It was given to her in 1949 by Mrs. James Elbow Woods in honor of Mrs. James Eagle's boy, Lester Crow Heart, who was killed in the war. The funeral was with full military honors but still Indian."
