Impressionist & Modern Art

Department

Freeman’s has always had a long-standing tradition of presenting exceptional works of Impressionist and Modern Art.

Freeman's has long held a tradition of presenting exceptional Impressionist and Modern Art at auction. In recent years, landmark offerings have included The Collection of Sidney Rothberg (2024), which realized $4.9 million, led by Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Portrait de Pierre Goujon en Costume Marin, sold for $330,200. The Estate of Dorrance "Dodo" H. Hamilton (2018) achieved $6.1 million, highlighted by Paul Cézanne's La Vie des Champs, which realized $1.45 million and is now housed in the National Gallery of Ireland. More recently, The Collection of Laura Pels (2024) featured the largest group of modern works by Françoise Gilot ever offered at auction.

Following its merger with Hindman in 2024, Freeman's established a dedicated Impressionist and Modern Art department with two curated auctions each year. These sales celebrate the evolution of European art, bringing together the pioneers of Impressionism, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, and Mary Cassatt, with celebrated Modern masters such as Maurice Utrillo, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Jean Cocteau. At the same time, they champion artists whose markets continue to gain international recognition, including Jean and Valentine Hugo, Jacques Martin-Ferrières, Yvonne Canu, and Roger Mühl.

Building on its longstanding expertise in Vietnamese art, Freeman's further expanded its leadership in 2026 with the launch of a dedicated auction devoted to Vietnamese Modernists. Featuring masterpieces by Lê Phổ and Vũ Cao Đàm, the white-glove sale realized $1.2 million across just fifteen lots, underscoring the firm's commitment to pioneering new collecting categories while maintaining the highest standards of connoisseurship.
